What's the advantage of a hand clutch vs. foot clutch ???

Although I really enjoy old tractors of all kinds, I am not from a farm background so I am wondering, what is the advantage(s) of a hand clutch (like say a Case D) over a foot clutch? Obviously, everyone eventually went to the foot operated clutch for a reason. I'm sure both types have their own advantages, I don't know. Also, why did Case keep the hand clutch for so long while others had either abandoned it or perhaps never even used it?
