Slumberjack, What kind of alternator is it? Is it a delco, ford, mopar etc. Let us know so we can help. It kind of sounds like an older delco unit by your post. If it is a delco (older) unit, The big terminal on the back goes to B+ (battery), terminal #1 (the one closest to the big terminal) goes to the ignition accessories circuit with a 10 ohm resistor in it, or the idiot light wired in it, but not both.If you don't have an accessories circuit you will have to use the ignition circuit,(Note if the tractor will not shut down you will have to put a diode in the circuit to terminal #1 between the ignition s/w and the light or resistor). Terminal #2 the one furthest from the big batt. terminal goes to B+. You can do that by hooking it to the big batt. terminal on the back, but it is the battery sensing circuit and should really go to the battery. If it is another type of G.M.-delco unit let me know & I will post wiring terminal numbers & hook up.
