I takeit we are talking internal regulated Delco. Looking at the alternator from the back you have three terminal s left to right. Two 1/4 inch blades, the plug in the side of the alternator that plugs into the regulator, and one stud. With the key OFF you sould have 12 volts on the left terminal, 0 volts on the center, and 12 volts on the stud. When you turn the key on you should have 12 volts on all three terminals. I work on a IH with an alternator proble something like you are having. There was damage to the wiring harness hidden by the oil filters.
