Y'know Rob, I think it's more about regulation than taxation. There was a pretty lenghty stretch of threads a while back over on the hauling board about states pushing for hobbyists hauling their tractors to a show, for example, having to have DOT#s. Seemingly harmless, except getting and keeping your DOT # and staying legal means (apart from common sense safety items like spare bulbs and fuses, emergency triangles, and fire extinguishers, which must be hard-mounted, not just in behind the seat . . .) having a random drug-testing program (you have to pay a contractor to do it for you), an acceptable safety program (another thing to pay for) . . . And that's just for crossing the 10k weight, nothing to do with 26k and CDL stuff.
I don't want to turn this issue political, but I really have to wonder who's driving all this.
