I'm an electrical engineer. Certainly don't claim to be an expert on battery chargers (not my area of work), but for what it's worth here is "my input" based on electrical engineering in general.
Charging an 8 volt battery from a 6 volt charger should work as long as the charger output voltage is higher than the battery voltage. That should work on a "dead" battery, but depending on how well the charger holds to its "stated" output voltage, it may not charge an 8 volt battery up to full voltage.
