The Cowman's got it right.
1. Hood off, drain oil pan and radiator. 2. Valve cover off 3. Look at freeze plugs (hey, you are there anyway...) 4. Rocker arm off, remove pushrods. (keep them in order - put back in same spot) 5. oil line off head 6. Disconnect carb at air cleaner. 7. Disconnect carb linkage. 8. Disconnect radiator at water neck. 9. Loosen head bolts - then remove 10. Wiggle head, use small putty knife to break seal if necessary.
I don't believe it's necessary to remove the thermostat housing.
