Sounds like you have the 'operators' manual. I would make 'service' manual your next purchase. Something like an I&T manual will tell you how to completely tear down the tractor (and put it back together). TSC will probably have them for $30.

I would find a nice clean, flat place to store the head. Once it is there, reinstall the rockers and valve cover, this will keep the parts free of dust and dirt. I built a plywood box for mine. The box can also be a place to store the push rods and misc nuts and bolts from the head.

To quote my dad when I was working on my first tractor: SLOW DOWN!!! :)

Lanse,

Take your digital camera out with you and take pictures of things as you disassemble them. It sure helps when reassembling when the time comes.

Hey and take a few pics of the cylinders when you get the head off and post them so we know what ya got there.

Lanse,Do us all a favor and please read the book. All of us are trying to help you on this tractor so that when this one is done you can do another one without being discouraged. If you don't have an IT manual let us know I may have one and if I do I will gladly let you read it SOO Please follow everyones advice and go slow so you don't break anything.I have a JD AR that I've been working on for 4 years and still haven't heard it run since I brought it home.My 16 year old son has a 69 Firebird that he has been working on for 2 years plus that he has not heard run yet. Why,because he is taking his time and listening to what people are telling him. Let us know on the IT manual Thanks

Lanse. Buy your self a white metal marking pen. Napa probably has them.Put little marks on some parts as you remove them. This helps me sometimes when reassembling things. Maybe your memory is better than mine. Put all the nuts and bolts in cans, and mark the cans. Looks like you're having fun that is what counts. Stan

Lanse I read some where if you hook a hot water hose to your engine block it will expand the block.Sometimes it is just enoughf to loosen the pistons. Have never tried it but it makes scense.

Last head I pulled I pulled it with the manifold, rocker arms and push rods still in the head. But doing that you need to be very careful or you can bend the push rods and then you have another problem to deal with. That head is still laying on a table in my shop

Allrighty, the hood, and valve cover are off, as are other things (carb, muffler, etc) and it looks great under there. There is NO rust or grime on anything, looks like it was cleaned (kyle, did you have anything to do with this?? :-) ) and i tapped the valves with a wrench, and cylender 2's move pretty well. So i guess i should unbolt the thing and set it in a very nice box away from barn cats?? What do i record??

I missed the part in Cowman's post where he suggested you hit the valves with a wrench... Bad, bad idea.

And at any rate, the movement of those valves has absolutely nothing to do with your frozen cylinders.

Look in the second section on the manuals set on pages 22 & 23 - covers head, valves, and rocker arms disassembly and reassembly.

take the valve cover off. then unbolt the rocker arm assy. The valve springs will push it up as you loosen the nuts. Lay it in the valve cover. Then pull out the push rods. The old timers will tell you to keep them in the right order but it realy don't matter. throw them in the valve cover too. Next take off the nuts on the head studs and throw them in the valve cover. See where I'm going with all this? if you keep all the head realted stuff together it will be easier to put back someday. and the stuff wont get lost. You will also probably have a small water manifold on the front of the head to take loose. And mabe a crankcase vent tube at the rear? Anyway when you get everything loose the head should wiggle loose easy enough. You can leave the manifold on for the time being, Just unbolt the carburetor. Try not to break anything.

The Cowman's got it right.

1. Hood off, drain oil pan and radiator.
2. Valve cover off
3. Look at freeze plugs (hey, you are there anyway...)
4. Rocker arm off, remove pushrods. (keep them in order - put back in same spot)
5. oil line off head
6. Disconnect carb at air cleaner. 7. Disconnect carb linkage.
8. Disconnect radiator at water neck.
9. Loosen head bolts - then remove
10. Wiggle head, use small putty knife to break seal if necessary.

I don't believe it's necessary to remove the thermostat housing.

The first thing Lance needs to do is SIT DOWN and read the manuals he recieved a day or to ago. Then go thur the proceedure Nebraska Cowman descripted. I don't think Howard knew Lance has the service manual...

What is the since of having manuals if one is not going to use them for the purpose what they were written for.

LANCE Read the durn manuals!!!!!

"i got my manuels yesterday, parts, service, and parts. Thanks"!!

Lance the "service manual" is suppose to be what is used in the shop.. So what do you really have? Owners manual and part manual?

I figured you had service(repair) manual from your earlier post. If I had known you did not have proper manual, I could have borrowed my Allis manual back and scaned a few pages for you!!

Thanks, but no its a service manuel, it covers things nicely, just i just flipped through it. I have gone through it and took notes, its in the shop now. Its not an I&T but its still pretty nice. It covered the head removal, but you guys are still a better sorce of info then any manuel.

Lanse, you need a shop manual. An I&T manual should work. BTW, if that fuel bowl filter don't work out, I got one off of an M you can have. May need a new gasket, my emails open.
