I'm not getting into a colour war but an MF 150 with a Perkins AD3-152 diesel held the fuel economy record for a long time. Other tractors with the same engine were close behind. This was for diesel engines, being that diesel is more efficient, I'm not sure if gas fuel economy would really be relevant if the overall goal was efficiency? A JD may pull an N series around but because of the 3 pt. hitch, especially on the 8N, the Ford is a more modern tractor and thus still get a good price in good condition. Probably a lot more of them running than the JD's, partly because more were sold than the JD's. The lower numbers and uniqueness give the JD's value but a tractor like an 8N can hook up to any brand new 3 pt. implement on any dealers lot. Even if the JD had better pulling power or was more fuel efficient, it can't hook onto a new 3 pt. implement. I don't even think you can buy pull type compact implements as all new tractors in the lower horsepower class use 3 pt. mounted implements. Even if some pull type implements are made, there are hundreds of 3 pt. implements which make any tractor with a 3 pt. a more versatile machine able to do more jobs. Like it or not, the 3 pt. hitch made a lot of smaller tractors obsolete. It has been described as the greatest innovation in mechanised farming. The fact that every smaller tractor has it is proof of this. It will continue to be around for a long time yet, as nothing has come along as an improvement. Larger tractors, mostly in Europe also incoperate a front type hitch as well. Not saying the JD's weren't a good tractor but people tend to buy them more as a collector or show tractor and the N series more of a work tractor for small acreages. That would explain why the JD's sell for more as well. Collectors tend to pay more. Dave
