I know these type posts can be real tough to answer. Experience varies widely, brand loyalty factors in, etc. Nonetheless, with all the experience here I'm curious on what you all think.

I have used a Ford 8N and at 6'4" it's a wonder I'm not in traction. Room is important. I have a 1960 Ford 641. It is roomier than the 8N but turning to look back at an implement is a chore since my legs are too long to swing past the dash.

So here is the question. Based on the following, what would you buy if you were I, assuming I have no brand loyalty?

1. Tractor model that can be had for a reasonable price and has a reputation for dependability.

2. Diesel engine preferred.

3. Enough legroom to not break my kneecaps.

4. Good parts availability.

5. Used mostly to run a four of five-foot rotary mower to cut about fifteen acres, and to box blade less than a mile of dirt roads.

6. Three point hitch and live PTO

I guess that's about it.

Try a Allis D17, ~55HP. If that's to much HP try the D15. Cost you about $3-4000 and they are bulletproof, parts easy to get, lots of support on the Allis page etc. I got one and love it.

Thanks for the suggestions and I"m happy to hear more.

Here are some answers to some of the questions asked.

It may be an inseam issue as much as height but I’m an honest 6’ 4”. I say it that way because I rarely look eye to eye or up at anyone including those who tell me they are well over six foot. I’ve met a good many 6’ 3” folks that were four inches shorter than I, and I used to get weighed and measured regularly for USMC so I figure I"m pretty close to right. I am about 290 but at 230 I"d have had the same issue. You learn to adjust but it’s nice not to have to.

I"m not planning a purchase soon. I watched an old tractor show on RFD and noticed that some of the AC and some other makes seemed a lot roomier for the operator. That could be my imagination though.

As far as price goes, it’s hard to say. It would definitely be a used one that I wouldn’t have to dump too much into, maybe $6000 but that may not be realistic. Hard to say right now.

Trust me on this one, when you’re six four the first thing you learn on any vehicle is how to slide the seat back. I didn’t own the 8N but I drove it enough to know I’d smack a knee turning around to look back.

I’m in a reasonably agricultural area for Eastern NC, but older tractors don’t seem to come available as much as in some places. I drove to OH to get my 641.

The 641 has the original metal seat.

Head north for better prices and better tractors.
For $6000 you should be able to get a good tractor. Not long ago I saw a nice Oliver 1365 diesel (55HP) with loader and rebuilt engine go for around $5000

I get the feeling you're going to want a flat deck tractor as opposed to straddle mount. Lots more room for turning to watch an implement. Unfortunately most of the flat deck tractors are going to be larger hp machines than you may want or need. Maybe you just have to climb on a bunch and try them out for size? Just stop right in and climb on, I dont think anyone will argue with someone your size. LOL

Sounds like you need something with a flat platform so you aren't straddling the hump. Only thing comes to my mind right now is the neighbors JD 3010 utility. Oliver made a 1550 utility too,but they are as hard to find as the 3010U. Maybe a 160 Allis, they were a flat platform weren't they?

If you're thinking about John Deere older utilities, the 420/430 may come to mind. Very nice tractor, but the most irritating tractor to mount and dismount that I have ever used. And I'm only 5-9. Stay away.

I'm 6-1 and don't have any problems with the 8Ns or my 841. You do know you can set the seat back on almost all tractors so as to give you more room don't you?? But you also didn't fill in one blank which is how heavy are you that can also be a factor. I'm around 160lbs so I fit in places some one thats 250 will not

Live pto, live high volume/high pressure hydraulics, power steering, robust enough front axle not to break is a loader is ever added, synchronized or shuttle shift transmission, differential lock, high out put electrical system, factory or approved aftermarket rops etc. Eliminate the tractors laking those features and look at the rest. There are those who whine about the Deere price. New price at the dealer, all brands pretty much compare. How somebody cries about brand X of used tractor retaining more worth after 20 years than brand Y? It's just jealousy that their favorite brand drops to scrap value sooner. As for brand, your local dealer's worth figures in here heavy.

Why would anybody be jealous that they can get their favorite brand of tractor for half the price of their non favorite tractor? Nobody here whining about the price of a JD. We have White, Ford, and IH products that serve us very well. If the price is lower that means we have more cash in our pockets too. Something most people seem to be having some trouble with nowdays.

If you knew anything about finances the concept of net worth and depreciation mean something. Lets see..... .purchase item A for $50,000 and in 10 years it's worth 2/3 of it's original price? Or purchase item B for $50,000 and in 10 years it's worth 1/3 of its original price? Even if you purchase the 10 year old used tractors. At age 20 years tractor A is still going to have cash value. Tractor B's price will depend largely on the condition of the tires, battery and how fuel there is in the tank. Who is ahead of the game?

One problem with your theory, item B didn't cost $50,000. Probably closer to $40,000, which left the farmer with an additional $10,000 in the bank and he could start making money with a lower initial outlay of cash. The bottom line is always the most important factor. Item A should be worth more if it cost more initially. If you buy a machine to keep for 10 or 20 years, it should have payed for itself a few times over, so the resale value shouldn't be a great concern. Dave

If I knew anything about finances I probably wouldn't be buying tractors! Actually the guy who would be ahead would be the guy who bought the farmall because he has an overall better tractor. Even if you compare a 9n Ford to a JD B the Ford has technology that makes it look 50 years newer. And just because your wife wears the pants in your houshold doesn't mean you have to come on the board and try to be a nasty little man. Your replies are always arrogant and nasty because you can hide behind your keyboard and be a king in your little virtual world. If you were face to face with most of these guys on here you insult you would be a very submissive charactor, I guarantee it.

How is it, your response financial when matters are logically explained. In your your attempt to "be superior"? Your communication becomes emotional and insulting? Are your feelings are hurt because your used non green tractor is worth less $$$ than a green tractor? If the JD B was such a piece of outdated trash? How did Deere fool so many repeat customers into purchasing that series from the mid 1930's until 1960? Do looks and performance necessarily go hand in hand? How did the two cylinder Deere 70/720/730 set fuel efficiency records unbroken from 1954 until 1984? Any old B/50/520/530 will drag a Ford 8N,2N or 9N around behind it until the Ford flips and crushes its driver. Yes,my wife can wear my pants as she stands 6'1" tall. As for nasty, anybody who disagrees with you by your definition is therefore nasty. Some people are judged by their friends character. On the other hand I'm going to sleep soundly tonight with self worth knowing somebody like you dislikes me. As for being submissive? I was a Captain on the Fire Department in a Nuclear Plant for 10 years. Now I'm a foreman also in a Nuclear Plant where no nonsense is tolerated. I've also spoken in front of crowds for two years at the New York Two Cylinder Expo. Without trembling or sweating while giving 24V starting and charging system seminars.Nobody offered to verbally or physically assault myself either. As for being a wuss? I worked as a doorman in some tough bars in Toronto for two years. I have been involved in more than one "situation" with unruly patron(s).

I'm not getting into a colour war but an MF 150 with a Perkins AD3-152 diesel held the fuel economy record for a long time. Other tractors with the same engine were close behind. This was for diesel engines, being that diesel is more efficient, I'm not sure if gas fuel economy would really be relevant if the overall goal was efficiency? A JD may pull an N series around but because of the 3 pt. hitch, especially on the 8N, the Ford is a more modern tractor and thus still get a good price in good condition. Probably a lot more of them running than the JD's, partly because more were sold than the JD's. The lower numbers and uniqueness give the JD's value but a tractor like an 8N can hook up to any brand new 3 pt. implement on any dealers lot. Even if the JD had better pulling power or was more fuel efficient, it can't hook onto a new 3 pt. implement. I don't even think you can buy pull type compact implements as all new tractors in the lower horsepower class use 3 pt. mounted implements. Even if some pull type implements are made, there are hundreds of 3 pt. implements which make any tractor with a 3 pt. a more versatile machine able to do more jobs. Like it or not, the 3 pt. hitch made a lot of smaller tractors obsolete. It has been described as the greatest innovation in mechanised farming. The fact that every smaller tractor has it is proof of this. It will continue to be around for a long time yet, as nothing has come along as an improvement. Larger tractors, mostly in Europe also incoperate a front type hitch as well. Not saying the JD's weren't a good tractor but people tend to buy them more as a collector or show tractor and the N series more of a work tractor for small acreages. That would explain why the JD's sell for more as well. Collectors tend to pay more. Dave

As soon as the three point hitch patent ran out Deere and most other tractor manufactures equipped their machines with a true three point hitch. The Dubuque model 40 released in 1952 had a true three point hitch.Plus a real drawbar, a high volume hydraulic pump and optional remote hydraulic connection. Try finding those latter two on a Ford? By 1957 the 420/430 and diesel 435 had not only a real three point hitch.Plus a true drawbar, a high volume hydraulic pump and optional remote hydraulic connection. Optional power steering, 5 speed transmission and live pto. Any old Waterloo B,A or G can be retrofitted with a true three point hitch upper link. By 1952/1953 the 50,60,70 had live hydraulics, remote hydraulic couplers, the two lower links of the three point hitch, live pto and in 1954 power steering.Again a true three point hitch 3rd link is a simple "bolt on" matter. The 1957 and later 520/530,620/630 & 720/730(optional diesel) not only had the live hydraulics, a true 3 point hitch and rear hydraulic remotes. They could all have live pto and power steering. The Ford rapidly lost it's market share after 1952.

Not to JD as far 3 pts. went. How many of these older JD's with 3 pts. are still around? Did they have draft control or just lift up? Fords were the number two selling tractor world wide for many years. Right up until they they sold out, I believe. There are 3pt. hitches and then there is the advanced Ferguson system that came out on the 100 series MF tractors. For controlling mounted implements, there is no better system. "JD and almost every other manufacturer equipped their machines with a 3 pt. hitch". They pretty much had to if they wanted to sell lower HP tractors. JD makes a good tractor but world wide they aren't near as popular as they are in N. America. The MF 35 is the most copied tractor in the world. Check with auction companies, 35's and 135's are the most sought after used tractors. There's companies in the UK that buy 135's to completely restore to new condition and then sell for a premium price to small farmers. There is a demand for them because they are legendary tractors. JD never set any sales records for lower HP tractors, even after they put a version of a 3 pt. on theirs. I'm not sure if they set any tractor sales records. They might have in a higher HP model but overall, I don't think they've ever been the best sellers world wide. North America yes, but just like the Aim Trimark commercials, the world doesn't comprise of only one country. The world wide market is much bigger than just the N. American market. It's kind of weird how different brands are popular in different areas. Dave

i think most any american tractor will be fine, your just going to have to move up to a larger frame tractor, i have a ford jubilee, which should have the same operators area as your ford, also i have a john deere 301a, [ a industrial version of a row crop 1020] the jd is much easier to twist around and watch the impliment on, although i dont have too much problem on the ford either, im 6'5, what seat does your ford have on it, some aftermarket seats even the period corect optional ones really reduce the amount of room you have, mine still has the original pan seat

i should have mentioned the jd is a diesel, and compared to the ford, it has twice the power, and burns less than half the fuel, we use it as a loader tractor and i disc and harrow with it too, i love my old ford, and all old tractors, but with 300 a gallon fuel that jd is simply cheaper to run

All the utility tractors of the Ford 8N era were cramped and confined for big guys. I'm 6'-5" and went through the same thing with an old Ferguson 30. In 1971 I bought a Massey Ferguson 150 and still own it. MUCH better ergonomics due primarily to a better seat arraingment and a steering wheel position that allows me more leg room.

Tractors from the 60's and 70's will seem light years ahead of the N's. Better power, better braking, Live power, better and more gearing, improved ergonomics, the list goes on and on.

The 150 is essentially a variation of the 135. The diesel versions of either had what is probably the best small diesel ever built in the Perkins AD3-152. Great fuel economy, they last forever, and if you do need to rebuild, they're among the lowest priced engine kits on the market. Parts for the 100 series MF's are easy to get ahold of through AGCO/MF or dozens of aftermarket sources. Loads of 135's around too. They'll be easy to find.

If you didnt want diesel an H or M would serve good easy to get on and off easy steering and enough power to do what you want and a three pt is easy to install drive one and you will like it.

Are you in an area where ag tractors are plentiful (vs urban area where only "acreage" tractors are available)?

If so, I would look for a JD 3010 D or an IH 706D. Lots of(maybe all of) the 706's had a 2-point hitch, but I know lots have been converted to 3-point.

BOTH very dependable, both flat operator's platform for lots of room, parts are easy to get, more power than it appears you need(but you cannot have too much power), both live hyd and PTO. Those old 8N's still have a loyal following in some areas, so you could get $$ for it towards a "real" tractor.

I sure wouldn't buy some new little compact "tractor" for big bucks--they are for rich estate owners in my opinion, as they are more of a status symbol than a workhorse.
