Just want to know why

I have two Case Shop manuals. One says very specifically that when replacing the rods and bearing caps to put the numbered sides on the opposite side of the camshaft.The other manual doesn't say any thing about the numbers other than to match #1 rod with #1 cap etc.My question is why are the numbered sides opposite the cam? What happens if you put them on the same side as the cam. Just want to know the reason why. Thanks.
