Excess oil can cause detonation which will ruin an engine faster than insufficient lubrication. The extra oil tend to lean the mixture which causes higher temps and increases the tendency to detonate. Oil also has a very low octane rating compared to gasoline. So the extra oil also causes detonation due to it's chemical properties. Damage from detonation and insufficient oil can look similar. Scored cylinder walls and ruined rings can either be lube or detonation problems. Broken rings, ruined ring lands, signs of excessive heat are caused by detonation. Another reason to run premium fuel in your two stroke engine.
