I think the later ones were fairly reliable if they were maintained properly. They're like anything else in that regard. Change the oil and keep them adjusted, they're OK. I just never took a liking to them in terms of use. Never did much with one, but the first impression was poor. I'd sooner an 8 speed crashbox by a wide margin.
As far as repairs go.... dig into a gear transmission of that vintage, and do a clutch job on one, and you'll find that they aren't cheap in any way, shape or form.
So, I think it's a matter of what you prefer to operate. If you like a jerky power shift, go with the jerk-a-matic. If not, go with the 8 speed thousand series. That transmission is about as close to bulletproof as any ever made.
