Do any of you have any experience with the Select-O-Speed transmission with the handle up on the dash to the right? I know nothing about them. Is this a manual trans? How reliable and user friendly are they? Comments please?

I own a 4000 Ford (3cyl gas) with SOS(select-o-speed).It is a powershift transmission(shift on the go). In my opinion they are a good transmission. They were developed by the same engineer who latewr developed the John Deere powershift. They have 10 forward speeds , 2 reverse. The earliest ones had some issues , and the first 6000"s also had alot of trans problems. These transmissions required more in the line of maintanance/ proper adjustment than the others of their time, so many failed due to abuse/poor maintanance and hard use. These facts combined to give them a sort of bad reputation with some folks and a tractor with a SOS will usually be worth less than a similar manual trans. tractor. If you find one in good shape they are a good unit when operated and cared for properly.

I think the later ones were fairly reliable if they were maintained properly. They're like anything else in that regard. Change the oil and keep them adjusted, they're OK. I just never took a liking to them in terms of use. Never did much with one, but the first impression was poor. I'd sooner an 8 speed crashbox by a wide margin.
As far as repairs go.... dig into a gear transmission of that vintage, and do a clutch job on one, and you'll find that they aren't cheap in any way, shape or form.
So, I think it's a matter of what you prefer to operate. If you like a jerky power shift, go with the jerk-a-matic. If not, go with the 8 speed thousand series. That transmission is about as close to bulletproof as any ever made.

There good when working as they should but they take a lot of TLC to keep them working as they should. If you do not do what needs to be done to them off and on they become a big money pit and can cost a lot to fix

The SOS is kind of a mixed bag. My opinion is it's quite "user friendly". It's clutchless gear changing capability makes it handy for tasks such as bailing and bush hogging; also for shuttle operations like blading snow, etc.

However my experience is the SOS does NOT stand up up well to abuse or continuous heavy loads (plowing, etc). Also some (or all?) SOS tranny's will freewheel in certain gears under an overhauling load - a definite safety issue if you use the tractor in hilly territory. Finally the SOS is not cheap to repair when it breaks, and finding someone to work on one can be a problem.

They are dangerous, in my opinion. I don't know how many times I've come close to losing a finger while trying to couple one to a hay wagon.

Jumpy little critters.

If you will go to the above sites: Ford 9N,2N,8N and Ford, scroll back a few pages in the chatter, this should shed some light on the SOS.

I drove one a few years ago and it was pretty slick, but I understand the early one had trouble and were quite difficult to work on.
