OT- Online Cerificate of deposits

Any one have any experience with "online" banks? I just see that certificate of deposite rates are far higher than any local banks (ex. Year CD $5,000 6.50%
$25,000 7.00%
$100,000 7.50%
3 Year CD $5,000 6.75%
$25,000 7.25%
$100,000 7.75%
4 Year CD $5,000 7.25%
$25,000 7.75%
$100,000 8.25%
5 Year CD $5,000 7.50%
$25,000 8.25%
$100,000 8.75% This is through "Millenium bank"
There are numerous other that offer these rates or slightly lower, most are 1-2% higher than anything around here. How do you know which are legitimate banks, how do you know you money is safe and secure? Any advice would be great and probably use ful for most of us. Being on this site yolu know who to trust and who not, so xozitar need not reply.
