I believe you have an I40, or I400. As you suspected, it is based on the d10 or d12. A couple of good books to read Norm Swinford's Allis Chalmers construction Equipment, and C. H. Wendel's The Allis Chalmers story. To find serial #, look at carb side of engine. Find the seam where the motor meets the tranny. Stamped into the motor side of the flange is the motor #. Stamped into the tranny side of the flange is the tractor serial#. Both of these flanges are about 1/2 inch wide, and at the point of stamping, the flange is at about a 45 degree angle to the ground. An easy way to tell if it is late model(I400), is that the muffler and hole in the sheetmetal is oval. Make sure that the hole has the factory oval, not chopped,hacksawed etc.
