MONTE CARLO TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD HELP POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.MY WIFE'S 99 MONTE CARLO WON'T DOWN SHIFT FROM CONVERTER LOCK UP PROPERLY. MOST OF THE TIME,IT JERKS AND STUMBLES.IF YOU TROMP DOWN ON THE GAS OR MANUALY DOWNSHIFT,IT WILL DOWNSHIFT,BUT MOSTLY IT WILL NOT MAKE A SMOOTH SHIFT OUT OF CONVERTER LOCK UP.THIS USUALLY OCCURS AT 40 MPH WHEN YOU ARE GOING UP A GRADE OR ACCELERATING SLIGHTLY FASTER.ALL OTHER SHIFTS ARE GOOD.ANY HELP OR IDEAS ARE APPRECIATED.THANKS.
