I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD HELP POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.MY WIFE'S 99 MONTE CARLO WON'T DOWN SHIFT FROM CONVERTER LOCK UP PROPERLY. MOST OF THE TIME,IT JERKS AND STUMBLES.IF YOU TROMP DOWN ON THE GAS OR MANUALY DOWNSHIFT,IT WILL DOWNSHIFT,BUT MOSTLY IT WILL NOT MAKE A SMOOTH SHIFT OUT OF CONVERTER LOCK UP.THIS USUALLY OCCURS AT 40 MPH WHEN YOU ARE GOING UP A GRADE OR ACCELERATING SLIGHTLY FASTER.ALL OTHER SHIFTS ARE GOOD.ANY HELP OR IDEAS ARE APPRECIATED.THANKS.

First things first. This is a 4T65E trans, fully electronic. GM has had tons of calibration issues with the computers.
If you have a good dealership in the area, take it in and explain the problem. Chances are very good that they can reflash(update) the computer.
This will load a new set of parameters. Gm has had alot of trouble with low load chugging, so they reprogram the computer to not call for lock-up so early. I would bet this will take care of your problem for under $100.

Wish you were there to share that sentiment with my wife as I try to explain why buying another tractor is the only level-headed thing to do.
My wife is also into the horse thing, so I guess it did appeal to her that I needed that skid steer for cleaning up after her hobby. Can`t win em all, but what fun would that be anyway....

Very typical. You've found the sour spot where you should try not to drive - max torque load with a less than torquey moter (I'm assuming 3.1 or 3.4 Chevy ). The "corrrect" answer is to not do this, if you have a long drive hold it in 3, or go faster or slower. But, assuming it didn't always do it, there are 3 distinct possibilities.

note that htis is right at a double shift point which may or may not be a "shift". The torque converter lockup is not the same as the 3-4 shift. At 40mph under a load you are on the edge of converter unlock, 4-3 downshift with converter remaining locked, or both.

1. It is possible that the converter is not unlocking properly. A quick test - at 55mph on a flat road, in OD, the converter should be locked. set the cruise control. and note the engine RPM (tach or sound). When you touch the brake pedal lightly (to trigger the switches - do not brake the car), the switches will activate to cancel the cruise and unlock the converter. There will be a slight rise in engine RPM. Yes? then the converter is unlocking OK.

2. The eninge may have a miss under lugging load. Under the chugging condition, lightly touch the brake (again, to trigger the switch, not to brake the car). If the problem goes away without the trans shifting, suspect engine miss (dirty injector, plugs wires worn cam intake leak (very common on high mileage 3.4's) etc.). This is the most common problem.

3. the trans may not be downshifting properly. At 40mph my van is in 3rd not 4th, 4th is 42mph and tcc is 45. You'd have to have another car to compare with to be sure.

Could be s solenoid, or electronic problem, but, historically, the problem is typically caused by a bad convertor. The convertor acts like a centrifuge, and and metal fillings, dirt and debris get thrown outward, right to the area when the lockup clutch parts need to slide smoothly.

Sounds like the converter solonoid thats located behing the pan on the drivers side of the transmission thats bad.

The solonoid is what locks and unlocks the converter.

Might be as simple as a brake light switch which also controls the transmission converter lockup.

This swith/solonoid is not hard to put in.

Take off the front drivers side tire and remove the inner plastic where the drive side axle comes through the wheel weel housing and you will be looking at the end of the transmission that has a pan on the end of the trans and remove all the bolts.

If you tilt the car enough on jack stands you wont loose much fluid.

If I remember right the bolts ar 10m and its real easy to replace because theres only two wires and one or two bolts that holds the solonoid to the valvebody.

Like I stated above I would check the break light switch to see if its functioning correctly.

Might check to see if your car has a TSB on the trans issue.
