O ring groove

I am in the process of cleaning the O rings grooves for my JD 4-219 engine block. I am finding the water side first O ring shelf pitted a lot. The bottom two are in good shape no pits. Since there are two good O rings grooves, is it necessary to have a perfect surface for the first O ring (which is actually square) I will need to sand thec crap out of the block to get the pits out for the first water side ring. Is it really necesary, or will the rubber squeeze into the pits. thanks for any info. Stan
