I am in the process of cleaning the O rings grooves for my JD 4-219 engine block. I am finding the water side first O ring shelf pitted a lot. The bottom two are in good shape no pits. Since there are two good O rings grooves, is it necessary to have a perfect surface for the first O ring (which is actually square) I will need to sand thec crap out of the block to get the pits out for the first water side ring. Is it really necesary, or will the rubber squeeze into the pits. thanks for any info. Stan

When I assemble those, I use a small amount of silicone sealer on those parts, figuring that the silicone will ease the assembly, and then fill up the pitted places. Just my $.02 worth.

Clean it as good as you can and then touch the pits up with JB Weld and sand the goves smooth with no high spots in them.

Say is the oring groove on that engine in the bottom of the sleeves or in the block.
if they are on the sleeve just clean the block for rust an put it together.
If it's like most engines that upper most oring does not go very deep in that bore.some engines not at all it's allmost like a safty.I use silicone lubicant to put them in have'nt had any trouble?

The grooves are in the block. The surface in question is not actually a groove, but what I would call a 1/2 groove. the liner has a step and pushes the ring into the block step. Stan
