I was doing maintenance work for a friend and discovered that 21 of 36 maples had been scuffed badly by his son on the riding mower. Instead of trimming around the trees he was trying to do it with the rider. I used black roofing compound and every tree is doing well. The scuff must be sealed against insects which carry diseases, the bark must surround the tree or the tree will die. Try to set the bark back in place and tape it with a flex tape. Use the roofing compound to seal everything up. Next spring remove the tape and reseal with the roofing compound. The tree will take ove rand regenerate bark and heal itself, it just needs some help right now..good luck
