Roofing compound, tar, prunning paint, etc...A waste of time and may/proply hurts as much as you think it helps. Sometimes the cambium layer will heal if it is still attached and you can pull it back over and tape it. I use masking tape when this type of injury occurs. Insects are not the worry, rot and decay are the main problems.
