To clarify S.G.'s reply, of the Dorf 6-Volt utility tractors, only the 9N, 2N, and 8N tractors prior to the late side-mount distributor 8N's used a ballast resistor to drop the voltage ahead of the "6-Volt" coil. The late 8N's, and NAA series used a TRUE 6-Volt coil that didn't require a ballast/dropping resistor. And, the "Voltage Regulator" is a component of the CHARGING SYSTEM. It DOES NOT have to be functioning properly, or even be present, for the engine to start.
