I guess S.G. and I got a little carried away there, and forget to try to help with your problem!

Put a test light on the primary terminal of the coil that connects to the distributor, with the ignition switch "ON".

Is the light lit or not?

Crank the engine with the starter. The light should flash "on" and "off" rapidly, as the points open and close.

What are you seeing there... light flashing, as it should, light on steady, light off steady???

Doug,

It is VERY common for the insulated "pass-though" bolt on the disributor that the the wire from the coil connects to to short to the distributor case.

Try this... breaker points OPEN. Disconnect the PRIMARY wire from the stud sticking out the side of the distributor.

Turn the key on. Does the test light show power at the "distributor-side" coil primary terminal now? If so, touch the primary wire to the stud you removed it from. Do you see a spark? Does the test light go out? If "yes", and "yes", the stud (bolt) is shorted where it passes through the distributor, or the points, condensor, or something else in the distributor is shorted out!

(REMEMBER, points must be OPEN for this test.)

Email me, if you like, 'cause by the time I get back on here tomorrow night, probably, this thread will be a couple of pages back!

A 1953 Jubilee will have a "round-can" coil, with a "high tension tower", and two primary terminals.

One primary terminal, labeled "batt" or (-) (as this is a (+) ground system) will be connected back to the ignition switch.

The other primary terminal, labeled (dist) or (+) will be connected to the distributor, where it connects to the breaker points and condensor. It is the primary coil terminal connected to the distributor that I want you to monitor with your test light, while cranking the engine.

Simply jumper around the damaged ignition switch, or simply replace it, as you will need to do that sooner or later, anyway!

Be SURE to keep the tractor in neutral, just in case you jumper something that bypasses the tranny-top safety neutral start switch, so you don't run over yourself, or someone else!

Check & clean all your connections to make sure they're making good connection & that you have no broken wire somewhere .Make sure that you haven't hooked up a wire wrong somewhere . To avoid corrosion on electrical wires use some dielectric grease on all connections . What ever you do , don't bypass the safety starting button . Are you sure you are pos. ground ? I'm not a mechanic but that' my ideas . I'm surprised soundguy can't give you some pointers . He seems to be pretty knowledged on these things . If you email me I can direct you to another site for some help . Good luck & God bless .Ken

It's that starter button by the gear shift . They have been know to malfunction , & some guys eliminate them . Not a good idea . If you find its bad , replace it & be safer . Good luck & God bless . Ken

No offense.. but do you have any neighbors that actually know anything about tractors? Even a friends kid that does mechanic work may be of some help.

( box with wires ).. I'm usingg some psychic powers here and guessing you mean VR.

Coil needing 3v? Not if you expect it to start. It's a 6v coil.. it needs all 6 of them volts.

A quick and dirty bypass straight from the battery to the primary of the coil, and you can bypass all of the other wireing and then check for spark.

A coil will have 2 windings.. a primary and a secondary. Primary is low voltage high current ... well.. high in ratio to secondary current anyway. Secondary is low current high voltage. When the primary or primary wire to the coil is refered to.. it is the incoming power wire to one o fthe posts on the coil.. and the other post goes to the points via the distribuitor feedthru insulator.

The secondary wire is refered to as a high tension wire sometimes.. and it goes to the plugs by way of the distribuitor cap.

To clarify S.G.'s reply, of the Dorf 6-Volt utility tractors, only the 9N, 2N, and 8N tractors prior to the late side-mount distributor 8N's used a ballast resistor to drop the voltage ahead of the "6-Volt" coil.

The late 8N's, and NAA series used a TRUE 6-Volt coil that didn't require a ballast/dropping resistor.

And, the "Voltage Regulator" is a component of the CHARGING SYSTEM. It DOES NOT have to be functioning properly, or even be present, for the engine to start.

I sat here wondering why people in general have so many problems with devices that run on moving electrons.. then it hit me.. it is 'us' as a societies fault. We don't teach usefull info in school.. ( ok.. some...usefull info.. like reading and writing and basic math ).. but no 'good stuff'.

A few years back, my day job looked like it was going to go "TU" and I started getting prepaired to teach electronics at my old high school. I had heard my old electronics teacher was retireing, and i had spoken to the administration years ago about getting in there and carrying the torch so to speak. Imagine my surprise when I was told that the class was being discontinued when he retired?!?!

That's why the average american can't even put batteries in the correct direction in a tv remote.

I used to work in an electronics repair shop. As a tech.. i filled out a form, stating what the problem was. A few of us techs used codes such as:

DEU or DUI, or TSTU

The sales people were used to seeing abreviations on the repair sheets that they didn't understand.. they always assumed it was some electronics lingo for a technical part that was replaced. Occasionally a customer would question what the referenced part was. Imagine the look on the boss's face when told that :

DEU = Defective End USer

DUI = Defective User Interface

TSTU = Too stupid to use

I had many device sent in for repair that simply had batteries in backwards, or that worked 100% and the user was simply unable to operate the device due to?? a bad case of knuckle dragging or years of partying and low brain cell population... or some other such mental condition...

Them's good, especially TSTU.

I was an Electronics Tech in the Navy for 22 years, plus another 10 after I retired in Computers and Network Support. I could have used that one nearly every day.

In the Navy, we used OM or ODA a lot.

Good ones.. I especially like the OM one.. nice and tidy.

Another one we used to use, when a piece of gear would come in that was broke in a weird way.. .. almost like the operator was trying to find new ways to damage something... it was:

WTF = what the f... ?? As in.. how in the world did he damage this device.. But then.. of course.. we had people that could break a 150# anvil .. etc..

What amazes me is that 70+ years ago, simple folk who had not been born into an electronic era could follow directions, order parts, and build and operate rather complicated radios.

Not to mention mule farmers learning to install breaker points.

Nowadays, most folks are so removed from actually building or repairing anything on their own, it is unbelievable!

Yep.. kids back then could buy heathkit parts and build 1 mghz single trace osciliscopes. Most kids nowadays don't know what an osciliscope is.

And ditto on breaker points. Heck.. farmers rebuilt their tractor is the field. I have a vintage tractor manual that stated to find a tree with a sturdy limb, and to use that to hook block and tackle to to lift engine from tractor.

We have made a generation that can only use a mouse or cellphone...
