You're the first to answer my original question!!

I went ahead and bought the Craftsman 20HP Kohler-powered Garden Tractor and mowed the lawn once so far. The hydrostatic seems fine, haven't noticed the speed change yet (but it doesn't sound like too bad a problem). The mulching deck worked well, kept the severe dust of the drought mostly at ground level. Wish they could make grass grow as well as weeds in this drought!

Reacting to all the other followups: I'm retiring a 1981 14HP Sears GT since the rotten Tecumseh engine finally died. They could sell me a short block plus head, carb, valves etc for about $1200! I haven't found another (better) engine that will fit in the space available so I gave up on it.

But the tractor itself was great! The original varidrive belt only just started slipping just before the engine died! I had no problems with buying parts from the 800 number, and I'm confident they would have gotten all the engine parts to me in a few days.

I looked at used Deeres. The new Craftsman cost less for a comparable used machine. "But Deere is so much better!". See previous paragraph!

Sears is not made by MTD, but by American Yard Products, who also makes Poulan. MTD makes Yard Machines, Murray (used to be good) and Cub Cadet (which now has rock bottom ratings). Other big-names are about as expensive as Deere. The choice was fairly obvious.

Thanks to all for the entertaining comments!
