2x4 at least I understand...

And can get a true 2x4 if I go to the local sawmill and get an unfinished board. They lose a 1/4" on a side to the planer. I'm sure the modern lumbermills probably can cut them a smidge tighter and plane off a little bit...but they've always kept the nominal name to be the traditional unfinished dimensions.
