farmall c air filter

hi all,just got dont restoring a farmall c new head gasket and rebuilt head.my question is that it smokes real bad when werun it. i think we have narrowed the problem to the oil in the air filter .we emptied the oil cup and when the oil burnt out of the cylinder its fine,has not smoked a lick since. now my question is what weight oil do you run in the cup we are using 5 w 30 should we use a gear oil or what? also this is going to be a show tractor so does oil in the air filter really matter?
