hi all, just got dont restoring a farmall c new head gasket and rebuilt head.my question is that it smokes real bad when werun it. i think we have narrowed the problem to the oil in the air filter .we emptied the oil cup and when the oil burnt out of the cylinder its fine, has not smoked a lick since. now my question is what weight oil do you run in the cup we are using 5 w 30 should we use a gear oil or what? also this is going to be a show tractor so does oil in the air filter really matter?

5W30 means that it is a multi-weight oil. When it's hot it acts like 30 wt. When it's cold it acts like 5 weight so it flows better cold. Since the air cleaner oil is not in the engine and does not get to engine tenperature, it's acting like a lighter oil. Use straight 30 weight oil and it'll clear up.

it smokes light blue smoke when there is oil in the cup, itsnot black like its running rich.but when theres no oil in the cuo it doesnot smoke .is it normal to see all these tractors smoke with oil smoke because of the oil bath filter

Yes, the oil in the air cleaner does matter. It is what the dirt sticks to as it is pulled through the mesh.

If you didn't already, take the air cleaner off and soak it overnight in a bucket of kerosene or diesel fuel. Have enough in the bucket to cover the large diameter part if it. Next morning work the air filter up and down like a butter churn until the dirt is all out of the mesh inside. Fill the oil cup just up to the mark on the side of the cup, don't overfill it.

When the engine runs, intake vacuum will suck some oil up onto the mesh. Air passing over the mesh will leave the dirt stuck to the oil. Just like those high-priced K&N filters that some folks put on their race cars.

Overfilling will cause a little oil to get sucked into the engine, making it smoke. BTDT

Rich, 5W30 or any other multigrade 30 weight oil will work. The "W" in multigrade oil does not mean weight, it stands for winter. 30 SAE is 30 SAE no matter what number is in front of it.

Stright 30W oil works well. Be sure you don't over fill it and you should be ok unless the screen in it is clogged up bad which would also make it smoke because it would make it run rich
