gas sending unit

My 1985 ford truck with a granny transmission does all trucking chores for the farm however I cannot get the gas tank sending unit to work...how do u check the wiring from dashboard to tank..are there intermediate connections or other controls..in other words is the wiring direct from tank to dashboard....all help is appreciated...I have a manual but it does not show wiring diagrams....
