gas sending unit

My 1985 ford truck with a granny transmission does all trucking chores for the farm however I cannot get the gas tank sending unit to work...how do u check the wiring from dashboard to tank..are there intermediate connections or other controls..in other words is the wiring direct from tank to dashboard....all help is appreciated...I have a manual but it does not show wiring diagrams....

many times the tank unit loses the ground by rust
if you cen get to the sender add a wire to a good ground on the frane art

Art: I have the sending unit out of the tank.I shall on Monday add another wire for ground connection...there are only two wires on the unit..I should be able to handle that...thanks I will post the results..at one time with the unit in my hand the guage on the dash would respond but that stopped also..I will be in touch..thanks so far..

joe, If you ground out the wire at the sending unit the gauge should peg out. If it does this then the problem is in the sending unit, not the wire which would be very possible. Especially since you said it worked once in your hands and not later. There are woven wires inside those things similiar to a rheostat if you are familiar with those, and they go bad or unwind after a while. BE CAREFUL TO NOT GET SPARK ANYWHERE AROUND WHERE THERE COULD BE FUMES.

Skipper:::: Thank you...I think you and Art should be acquainted..I wire brushed all components by machine and elect drill..the problem was the rusted tank opening..I took the sending unit apart and reset the little finger that rides the rheostat..I set it up and it works..now to put it all back together again...I have the tank off..u can learn something everydayand u made this 82 year old man very happy indeed...Thanks for the response....
