10-40? GM had a bulletin out a few years back- problem was 'carmelizing' of the viscosity index improver additive caused sticking rings at higher temperatures needed for pollution control. Sticking ring led to blowby and failure of some pollution tests. This was on smaller car engines running hot and fast. 10-30 had less VI additive so didn't stick rings as quick, flowed better to help flush oil in rings, gave better mileage ratings on EPA tests. Old gas tractor (50s) engines probably no concern, Diesels yes-use 15-40 CD spec for diesels if useing multivis, was what was used in JD4440s during picking time Wi fall as alternative to 30wt, better cold flow on startup. IHC/case/NH has a 10-30 low ash for cold weather recommended for the old ones to replace 10wt- working tractor doing heavy snow plow work, etc. RN.
