This is not hard to do and it is not a $960 job. Its on the left side of the block. Remove the fuel filter housing so you can get down to it. Pretty simple job. After you do replace the lift pump, I would recommend putting in a fuel pressure gauge. This should at least give you warning if the pump does start to go.
I got 146,000 miles out of mine. Best advice is to keep the fuel filter clean and use clean fuel. So long as you pay attention, then you should have to worry about the vp44.
