I have an problem with continuous popping back thru the intake air filter. At one time the engine ran smooth, then started this problem.Valves are set per spec..Compression at lowest cylinder number one is 130# all the rest i45 to 155 dry. With oil on piston tops number 0ne is 170 # and all the rest show 165 to 170 #.I have changed condensers twice. Have a new coil, points, dist cap, rotor and wires.Intalled new plugs of higher heat range but plugs continue to soot up.Also cleaned the carb.twice. I do not think this is a problem of valve float because the problem exists at low idle, then exaust noise breaks down even more as speed is increased.Manifold gaskets are new. At around 1200 RPM the engine backfires at times. I am sure the engine is not running lean otherwise what is the soot caused by. I am out of ideas unless this is caused by worn timing gears or maybe the oilpump gear driving the distributor is off one tooth.Have been around engines a lifetime but I am stumped on this problem I need help real bad. Thanks for any ideas or help .
