I have an problem with continuous popping back thru the intake air filter. At one time the engine ran smooth, then started this problem.Valves are set per spec..Compression at lowest cylinder number one is 130# all the rest i45 to 155 dry. With oil on piston tops number 0ne is 170 # and all the rest show 165 to 170 #.I have changed condensers twice. Have a new coil, points, dist cap, rotor and wires.Intalled new plugs of higher heat range but plugs continue to soot up.Also cleaned the carb.twice. I do not think this is a problem of valve float because the problem exists at low idle, then exaust noise breaks down even more as speed is increased.Manifold gaskets are new. At around 1200 RPM the engine backfires at times. I am sure the engine is not running lean otherwise what is the soot caused by. I am out of ideas unless this is caused by worn timing gears or maybe the oilpump gear driving the distributor is off one tooth.Have been around engines a lifetime but I am stumped on this problem I need help real bad. Thanks for any ideas or help .

I am certainly not a professional mechanic..., but are you sure your cam does not have a worn lobe or two? I know a worn out cam on my Chevy truck sure made it cough/backfire on acceleration. I don't know what the compression would be if the cam were worn. Glenn F.

have saw carbon build up also cause this , set throttle about 1/2 open when running and take a garden hose and spray a fine mist into carb let it eat about a quart to a 1/2 gallon of water this will knock carbon off valves and piston tops .

Are the wires correct steal core.?.027 valve setting,22degrees before tdc full advance. .023 plug gap,.020 point gap.Is the heat riser working in the manifold their cold blooded at times.Could the carbon build up be preingniteing the fuel or holding a valve open.Just grabing straws maybe.

Aloha, Don't know anything about tractors but if it has a distributor, maybe it has some worn bushings causing the shaft to wonder around. I know on auto distributors, there is a spacer or washer on the end above the gear. That could be worn causing the shaft to up and down. Just a thought.

You may be running to rich, that will also cause the back fires

I have a 300 Farmall that is doing the same thing. This past week I had that tractor running like a sewing machine and today I went to the barn and started it and it poped and sputtered bad. I have owned this tractor 3 years and it has always had a slight miss, I tried everything--new wires, new plugs, motor overhaul, complete head overhauled--put on different carb--had timing checked, have had the carb off and on at least 20 times and it's about to drive me up the wall.--I still believe both the carbs I have are bad and thats where my trouble is.It could also be a a small hole or crack in the manifold--dont know--al bane

Thank you all for the replys. This afternoon after posting my message,I pulled the distributer and removed the new points. These things have not run for 10 hours since new.I just could not believe the damage I found. The breaker half had built up a mound of metal that it had extracted from the stationary contact. This is generally an indication that the coil polarity was reversed but it has always been properly connected.Rather than purchase a new point set,I dressed up the old ones while on the bench. I was able to get a nice clean true surface. After reinstallation I fired up the engine and it ran so good that I immediately hookedup to a disc and went to a field to work.I really loaded up the old girl so tomorrow will examine the plugs for soot just out of curiosity. Thanks your posts.Ol Chief. 82 degrees here in central Texas Hill country today.

Points as you described a sympton of bad or wrong capacity condensor. usually bad condensor for low use replacement points, possible not proper connection of condensor wire to points, possible wrong voltage(6volt instead of 12volt or reverse)- this would be a bit gradual. If it starts acting up again, check condensor. RN
