disking hay field

I have a small field (4-5acres) that I'm baling. It's on top of a clay hill, was established about 6-7 years ago. What little alfalfa that's still left only grows 8-10" high before it matures, rest is mixture of grasses and a few weeds. Last year only got two cuttings and second was terrible. I have a tractor I want to give a good workout and I'm thinking my disk should do the job. What would happen if after I bale the first cutting I hook up the tractor and disk the heck out of this little patch? Am I just going to end up with lot more weeds or would it possibly help the field? I would plow under the place and start over but I may be moving within a years time and my dad just wants to mow it to keep the trees on the edges to take over the field.
