Help changing fuel filter on Powerstroke Dsl

The fuel filter light came on in my truck this morning, and again tonight on the way home. I noticed it running a little odd too. When I bought the truck, I was going to change the filter, so I knew when it was changed. I tried using my large screw driver to twist the cap off, the plastic cover over the valley of the engine kept me from getting the cap off Short of taking all the plastic off, how do you all get the caps off, is there a special tool ya"ll have made?
