The fuel filter light came on in my truck this morning, and again tonight on the way home. I noticed it running a little odd too. When I bought the truck, I was going to change the filter, so I knew when it was changed. I tried using my large screw driver to twist the cap off, the plastic cover over the valley of the engine kept me from getting the cap off Short of taking all the plastic off, how do you all get the caps off, is there a special tool ya"ll have made?

Thanks guys, I knew there were a few Powerstroke owners out there. I guess I"ll take the plastic off and go from there. The truck is a 1996 F250 with the 7.3 Turbo. I"m going to try and do the filter swap during my lunch hour today. Thanks again.

Hi Rich,

My 2002 7.3 PSD has a cap with spokes inside the lid. I took a 3" ABS thread x slip coupler with a screw in plug, plug has a square headed wrench end, then took a 4" side grinder and cut slots in the coupler edge to fit the lid spokes.

Open the filter drain
Take off filter lid
Clean filter bowel well, flush with diesel
Install Racor filter
Install new gasket soaked with diesel, pay attention to the gasket bevel,
Install lid
KOEO 3 times for 20sec each time, purge air from new filter
Close filter drain
Start engine as normal

KOEO= key on engine off

If you have a 6.0 PSD then you have different directions.

You have to remove the plastic cover over the top of the fuel filter housing to get at the filter. Mine (1999 F-350) comes off by removing the caps which have hex fittings on them for a 3/8" or 7/16" open end wrench or a deep socket. The original unit on my truck had stripped studs that the caps screwed to and I couldn't remove it. It came that way from the factory and I took it to the dealer who removed it and replaced it with the undamaged studs. Once you get the cover off, you can use an old fan belt, a "boa" wrench, or an oil filter wrench to take the cover off the fuel filter housing. You should drain the water out of the filter housing also. Hope this helps you.

Rich, I'd take the plastic off and leave it off, but anyways drain the fuel out and take a straight bit (flat) screwdriver and put the tip against an ear and gently and I stress be nice but firm, tap the screwdriver and thread the cap and filter out, when installing the new one coat the new rubbers with fuel to lube them, snap the new filter into the cap and thread back into housing and repeat screwdriver trick. If need more info email me directly David
