Battey acid leaking aroud cell caps

I've got two tractors that always have a damp spot around each battery cell cap. One is a 756 with a Delco DN externally regulated alternator. The other is a 460 with a generator. The 756 alternator puts out 14 volts running wide open, not sure about the 460 yet. What causes this? The 460 is so bad that it runs down the side of the battery, and I'm afraid it's going to wreck my new paint. I can hear the batteries on that one gurgling, even with the ground cable unhooked. I just got the generator rebuilt and a new regulator, going to put them on this weekend.
