One cause is charging at too-high voltage. One car that was doing this was charging at nearly 18 volts with an externally regulated alternator. Check the voltage at the battery while the engine is running. Should be slightly below 15 volts. Another cause is a loose internal cell connector. But this is usually on only one cell within the battery. It heats up and boils off the electrolyte.
