Yes, WalMart and many other retailers are making money from people purchasing food, clothing, and other essentials for donation to the Katrina victims but the fact is that programs such as these allow everyone to be part of the relief effort. I watched a local food drive at a major grocery store chain in South Texas backing trailers into the loading dock, unload and then drop the trailer out front to accept donations. This was repeated all day and has been going since Friday. Did the retailer turn a profit? Sure he did but think of the cost of transportation and logistics to get the items to those that need them. At a local relief center this same retailer has provided a great many services including a huge portable kitchen to provide hot food, trailers (both dry and reefer) for storage, and thier employees to man this equipment.

If you are concerned about profits for a retailer make a cash donation to either the local Food Bank or to the Salvation Army. These 2 organizations have the best track records for percentage of money going directly to victims.

I have spent over 30 hours in the past 2 days working with people that have nothing left but thier memories. You cannot stereotype or generalize who these victims are. I have met, talked, and helped provide needs to countless people and can assure you that a great many are not inner city poor folk. You cannot imagine the looks of terror of these people. A great many victims are simply in shock and in a survival mode. We have been able to tend to thier needs so far. At one point we ran out of clean clothing but these people needed/wanted to shower so badly that they were clothed temporarily in black trash can liners or showered in thier clothes. None have had an adequate amount of food or water for several days. There were no cots in the superdome nor were there blankets or armed security.

I am proud to say that if you or your family were involved in a disaster like Katrina that I would be there to help you, even if all I could do where to go to WalMart and donate a case of baby diapers purchased at retail.
