mark, mark, calm down a little.i tell you what, next time you are in a parts store(any kind) ask them if you can look up a part for your car or truck on their computer. i bet you will find out why they ask you those questions.computers in the parts business are set up that way.did you know some 4 wheel drive trucks take different oil filters, starters, etc. than their 2 wheel drive counterpart?
when i was alot younger i started selling parts. things were much simpler then. if you needed points, cap, rotor, for a v8 gm (or a v8 ford for that matter) it didn't really matter what kind it was.chrysler even used the same points and condensor in their 6 and 8 cyl engines. now you have manufacturers putting 2.0 single overhead cam and dual overhead cam engines in the same car. ford has a 3.0 ohv and 3.0 dohc it the taurus.these are not the same engines...remember the 351 fords? gm really screwed it up for us about 77 or 78 with the 5.7 thing...your oldsmobile could have had a chevy motor in it back then.
parts books were a lot easier to decipher back then..you did't have such a myriad of options to choose from..case in point..1/2 ton ford trucks all took the same u joint from about 1957 to 1972..now we have to know if your driveshaft is made of aluminum or steel.v8 chevies used to take the same thermostat..now we have to know the engine code..if you don't like all of the questions don't blame the partsguy..sometimes i feel that the reason a customer gets so upset over a simple question is that he really doesn't know either!!
as far as the pimply faced kid thing..maybe he is just starting out. if he treats you decent you should cooperate with him. if he treats you like a nobody i don't blame you for being mad..the guy who buys an oil filter today might come back in next week for a motor.
after all of these years i still go to the catalogs frequently. that being said, after using computers for 12 years i would hate to go back to the old hand tickets and using catalogs and price sheets. it is just a much more efficient way of doing things. hope you have a good evening..napaguy

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
