It sounds like you have an Briggs and Stratton engine.If so you will need to disconnect the battery positive connection. Then remove the cable from the starter and remove the two small bolts from either side of the starter that secure it to the engine.The pinion is retained on the starter shaft by means of steel cap which is held in place by a split pin or rolled pin.This pin must be driven out in order to remove the cap and spring. ( Caution ; Do not attempt to remove this pin with out supporting the end of thhe shaft over some partly opened vise jaws or similar support device.Have someone hold the starter so that you can drive out the pin by use of a small pin punch of proper diameter,taking care to catch the return spring and cap.Install the new pinion, then the spring and cap and finally replace the split pin.Replace the starter on the engine ann reconnect both ends of the cable and the job is done.Good luck !
