We have A sears Lawn Tractor 10.5 hp - electric start.

We are trying to install a gear pinion and the fly wheel is in the way. How does one install this gear pinion? We got the old one out as it was broken so it was easy to get out.

Thanks

Karen Miller

replace the clip with baleing wire twist it tight then cut your splice as short as possible any peice of wire the sameish size will work i have done this with countless tractors never had a problem with it

It sounds like you have an Briggs and Stratton engine. If so you will need to disconnect the battery positive connection. Then remove the cable from the starter and remove the two small bolts from either side of the starter that secure it to the engine. The pinion is retained on the starter shaft by means of steel cap which is held in place by a split pin or rolled pin. This pin must be driven out in order to remove the cap and spring. ( Caution ; Do not attempt to remove this pin with out supporting the end of thhe shaft over some partly opened vise jaws or similar support device.Have someone hold the starter so that you can drive out the pin by use of a small pin punch of proper diameter, taking care to catch the return spring and cap.Install the new pinion, then the spring and cap and finally replace the split pin.Replace the starter on the engine ann reconnect both ends of the cable and the job is done.Good luck !

Split Pin Purchase in reply to Ol Chief, 08-20-2005 20:50:17
We now have lost the split pin or c-ring as it seems to be called. It went flying when we tried to put it on. Where might we buy such a split pin?

Thanks again.

Sounds like you are describing a "snap ring" as opposed to a tension or split roll pin. go to the link & search snap ring. Is that what you need? They come in external & internal types, can be found at most hardware stores.

They are often called jesus clips as in "Jeeeezeee" as it goes flying into the next zipcode.

are you talking about the gear on the starter? if so there should be 2 bolts (maybe 3) that hold the starter on the engine remove them . remove starter find and drive out small pin on end of shaft that holds the gear on. remove gear paying attention to order in which the washer(s) spring , and gaer come off. reassemble with new gear and that should do it. it would n't hurt to remove the ground cable from the battery during this procedure ( just in case the key is bumped)
good luck
