Starter doesn't engage

I have a JD 4020 gas. The starter has gotten to where it will engage the flywheel less than half of the time, otherwise it just spins. What needs to be done to the starter? Can I take it apart and clean it? Previous owner had a loader on it and the valve leaked and ran down on to the starter, it may be full of oil and dirt. Other than that what is wrong with it? I am probably going to pull it off and disassemble and clean it before I purchase a new starter.
