I have a JD 3020 gas that had the same problem. I found that it was not getting a full 12 volts to the solenoid part of the time. I found the problem by putting a volt meter on the "s" contact at the solenoid and the voltage there was lower than the voltage at the battery and also the voltage at the main contact on the solenoid. There was a wire in the starting circuit between the switch and the starter button not getting good contact. This is just something easy to check before spending money on other things that may not help.
