From what I know, Komatsu uses hydrostat's exclusively. The big ones are pushing .....what.... 1200 hp? It's also worth considering that in that power class, the efficiency gain from having infinite speeds is better than dropping a gear, or lugging harder in a higher gear. Also eliminates a lot of steering problems in dozers, as power turns are a lot easier.
Actually, I think Cat was about the last to go to hydrostat's, and they still don't use them on larger dozers. Most manufacturers now use hydrostat's. It's the way to go.
