PC magazine has free downloads of utilities that could get you back running again. Most of them are shareware that will give you a 30 day trial so you can test drive them first. I have an old PIII 866 machine at home that would not run at all and was constantly crashing. The CD drives also suddenly became disabled and the computer would no longer recognize them. I downloaded a PC booster program and got speed back and then got a utilities program that fixed my CD issues. Turned out that the registry was so screwed up the box was locked up. All is well now
