If grease is really old (thirty, forty years) and waxy, it is best to start out with putty knives, dental scrapers, whatever, and scrape off as much as possible. Then warm up the engine, spray with Gunk, scrubb with a stiff bristle brush, respray with Gunk and then wash off. Might have to repeat process to get it really clean.
