You'll probaby ruin your glow plugs testing them that way. In some of the IHs (like your's) the glow plug indicator is also the current limiting resistor, and is hooked in series with the glow plugs. The glow plugs themsevlves are also probably hooked in series. So, if any one of them is bad, none will work. If you hook a 12 volt power source directly to any one of the plugs, it will probably burn out in a second or two - maybe even blow up. It's safer to check them with an ohmmeter unless you are very careful. Just remember, you can burn one out in a second or two when full power is fed directly to it.
