Is there a way to test glow plugs? I just got an older 3-cyl. International and have been having a hard time getting it started (And the air temp is in the upper 60's). It has the regular little coil that indicates when it's warm when you turn the key to "heat." The coil doesn't glow "red" though like I'm used to seeing. It turns over fine and I get whiteish exhaust as I'm cranking. I checked the fuel...it's fine, and when it finally fires it runs great. I'm ready to replace the glow plugs, but a wondering if I should just go ahead and change them, check them, or be checking something else???

I remember I could test the glow plugs on Ford diesel truck in place, with an ohm-meter. Test between the current input point (disconnect the wire, of course) and ground- Resistance will be infinite if its burnt out, and 3 ohms seems to come to mind if it's OK- but that may depend on the plug.

They can be tested, remove them, ground the body of the glow plug and momentarily connect a 12V source to the connector. They should heat up fairly quickly if they are good(you should see a wisp of smoke come off them if there is any fuel or oil residue on them). If the indicator is not glowing,I would check the wiring or switch first and see if you have current present at the glow plugs themselves before condeming the glow plugs.

I did check to see if I was getting power to the plug by removing one plug and with the plug out turning the ignition on...it sparked when I touched itto ground. Probably not the best way to do it, but I know I had power to it. The indicator coil would warm up, too hot to touch, but not glowing red. I will try doing as you said and let the plug warm up to glowing. Thanks.

You'll probaby ruin your glow plugs testing them that way. In some of the IHs (like your's) the glow plug indicator is also the current limiting resistor, and is hooked in series with the glow plugs. The glow plugs themsevlves are also probably hooked in series. So, if any one of them is bad, none will work. If you hook a 12 volt power source directly to any one of the plugs, it will probably burn out in a second or two - maybe even blow up. It's safer to check them with an ohmmeter unless you are very careful. Just remember, you can burn one out in a second or two when full power is fed directly to it.

That makes sense. I will break out an ohm meter and check them out that way. That's my trouble...a little info can be dangerous. Thanks, appreciate your time and knowledge.
