When the closed-center pump make noise except when a hydraulic function is being used, the stroke-control valve is probably making the noise if it's internal, or the pump drive if it's external. The stroke control valve is a commom wear item. Your tractor probably has the little German 8 piston pump (13 GPM), not the bigger pump style like most of the other closed-center Deeres use. I mention that because the parts are completly different for the two little German pumps most 1020s use. They both look the same and are the same physical size, but one has 4 pistons and pumps 6.5 GPM, while the other has 8 pistons and pumps 13 GPM. The industrial version of the 1020 (the 300) uses the big style pump, and I've seen a few 1020s with that setup that were converted for loader use.
